Living in Lancashire definitely has its advantages for people who love spending time outdoors. With the Lake District on our doorstep, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and about. With hundreds of different walks readily available, it’s not surprising that it’s considered the UK’s number one destination for walking enthusiasts. You really are spoilt for choice.
For those looking to narrow it down, or just looking for a little inspiration, we have you covered…
Latrigg
Perfect for: Families
Larigg is a pleasant and relatively short walk that is perfect for families looking to get out and about for an hour or two. It’s also brilliant for those who have limited mobility too, as the National Park Authority have worked hard to make it accessible to everyone, by creating a mobility path to the summit point. Starting on the Skiddaw access road above Applethwaite, you’ll see a path clearly set out. Simply follow this until you reach the viewing point. From here you can see some truly amazing views of Keswick and Derwent Water.
Scafell Pike
Perfect for: The Adventurous
For those who don’t know already, Scafell Pike is England’s highest mountain, standing at over 3,209ft. It’s definitely one of the most popular walks, with people wanting to tick it off their list! It’s pretty straight forward walk but it is a long way to the top. It’s also best done when the weather is dry – it can be tricky in bad weather. You should expect the trip to take around 6 hours! If you do reach the very top, you’ll be treated to some gorgeous views across the valley of Wasdale.
Loweswater
Perfect for: Walkers of all Abilities
This fantastic walk is a relatively easy route for most walkers, but it does include a couple of ascents, which may make it more difficult for those with mobility issues or families with young children. Along the way you will get to take in a mixture of woodlands, lakesides and gorgeous mountain views, as well as walking along one of the famous corpse roads (where the remote villagers used to carry their deceased across). The track is easy to follow – it’s clearly marked out!
Coniston Old Man
Perfect for: Confident Walkers
The Coniston Old Man route is probably one of the most popular in the Lake District and is a pretty easy one for those who are confident walkers. The trail takes you up the east side of the mountain – travelling through copper mines and slate quarries. All in all, the walk should take you just over 2 hours – depending on how long you spend taking in the brilliant sights! You can extend the walk by dropping down to the Walna Scar road via Goats Water.
If you’re looking to try out any of these walks, it’s important to have the correct equipment beforehand!
