When Irelands Eye Knitwear started out, it was a family business and that’s even more, true to date. No less than a grandfather, father, mother, three brothers, two sisters and eight grandchildren have been involved with the Irelands Eye Knitwear company.
Over the course of the past 40 years the Dublin Family has worked tirelessly to develop the company and its leading international Knitwear Brand and many members of the workforce have been with the company over 20 years. It’s fair to say that knitwear is in their blood. Some of their earliest memories are of their grandfather knitting chunky sweaters in the garage of the family home in Dublin with his inspiration coming from the need to wrap up against the elements of the coastal winds whipping Irelands Eye and the nearby fishing village of Howth where the fishermen bring their catch ashore. So it’s little wonder, that the current generation of O’Sullivans choose to combine this inherited passion for knitwear with their livelihood, creating a brand that are now sold in over 20 countries around the world.
Like many other family businesses, they started small and grew slowly but surely. They have built the Irelands Eye brand by looking to combine traditional Irish knitwear heritage with the very best of European design and this has stood them in good stead for over four decades. They have inherited a very strong sense of how the business should be run, including a preference for using natural yarns that are simply nicer to wear.
The tradition of Irish knitwear is built around individual knitters and small ‘cottage industries’. They have strayed very little from that model over the years and it can be seen in the hand-finishing of every single garment that Irelands Eye Knitwear produces. In a world that seems to be growing more and more uniform, Irelands Eye Knitwear are convinced that people want something special, something that sets them apart from the crowd. They can find this unique contemporary twist at Irelands Eye.
Today Irelands Eye knitwear is sold in premium and heritage stores globally. No matter where you may find yourself in the world you can be wearing a piece of knitwear inspired by the craggy windswept landscape of Ireland’s Eye a tiny island off the Dublin coast that lent its name to the company. With the next generation of the family already showing early signs of interest, they are set fair for a fourth generation to carry forward the tradition that is Irelands Eye Knitwear for many years to come.
